 "poor layout" 2009-09-11
By smaz (NJ)
Came on time (thanks Amazon) and it is a slick looking chunky watch that is light on the wrist. The problem is the layout makes it difficult to read the time for these older eyes, as the meaningless 10 second circle (why it is there at all, right next to the actual second hand clock, makes no sense after living it with a month) takes up space that would have been better utilized to expand the basic digital display.

Still - it clearly is a well-made timepiece and in good light I can view it ok. The tide display is a bit primitive but seems to work after a fair amount of internet searching for my local beach tides. Not something I would rely on, but for this beachgoer is adequate and a fun gimmick

 "A good choice" 2009-07-02
By G. Webster (Perth, Australia)
I am a G-Shock fan, and I really find myself wanting to LOVE this watch. I think it sells itself on a "concept" more than any actual, useful features - but that's fine as long as you're aware of what you're buying.

Typical of all G-Shocks, it is incredibly durable and feels rock solid. The buttons on this Gulfman are actually larger and more easy to press than many other G-Shocks, and that's a big plus. Let me try to break it down:

Pros:

- Sharp-looking display, slightly cluttered, but looks impressive.

- Titanium backplate and screws (essentially makes this watch rust-proof).

- Moon and Tide displays actually work with reasonable accuracy - after you have spent an hour on the 'net working out how to set them for your location :)

- Backlight ("dual illuminator") looks fantastic (after you see it yourself, you will understand).

Cons:

- Moon phase display is TOO SMALL. I can see it, but, it needs to be slightly larger.

- No dedicated Light button at the bottom of the face. Most G-Shocks have this button. It is sorely missed on this watch (instead you use the top-right button for the light)

This watch also shows a cool little animation as you switch between the various modes; for those interested, the modes are: TIME -> TIDE/MOON -> WORLD TIME -> STOPWATCH -> COUNTDOWN TIMER -> ALARMS. You have 2 alarms plus a third snooze alarm. As with many G-Shocks, you can set the display to flash with the alarm/hourly chime/countdown timer - completely pointless but incredibly cool at the same time :)

The tide graph has been working well for me, after I finally managed to set the correct values within the watch. No big deal if you are prepared to spend a bit of time searching on the internet. However, the graph is limited by it's own "resolution"; by that I mean the way the bar-graph is set up with only 6 segments, it will only flick to the next segment every 2 hours, so you are never really going to be sure exactly when high tide is for a particular day (as well as showing the current tide in timekeeping mode, this watch allows you to easily step through the hours of the day and see where the tide will be at that time). Similarly, it allows you to easily step through the days of the month and see what the moon will look like on that date. Anybody who depends on the tides/moon with any regularity will already have charts that show this information more clearly - but it fits well with the theme of this watch and it is a welcome feature.

... Is titanium really necessary on a G-Shock? Probably not, but as I said at the start, this watch is selling the "idea" that it was made for the ocean and anybody who interacts with the ocean. And in many respects it fits very well.

In summary, if you are the type of person who is interested in tides/moon, and who spends time near the ocean, this may well be a very enjoyable watch for you to own. It has great "wrist presence" with it's chunky plastic bezel, it weighs practically nothing thanks to the lack of steel, and it feels kind of cool just jumping into the ocean with a titanium-backed monster called a "Gulfman" strapped onto your wrist :)

On the other hand, if you are just looking for a general-wear G-Shock, you may want to check out other models such as the Mudman range (Casio Men's G-Shock Mudman Solar Atomic Watch #GW9000A-1), or my favourite, the DW-5600e (Casio Men's G-Shock Classic Digital Watch #DW5600E-1V).

 "Great features and value" 2009-05-12
By Peter Van Der Noord (Bradenton, FL USA)
I owned a G-shock for many, many years along time ago so I bought this one for my son on his 12th birthday. Great looking watch for young or old, but actually fit his smaller arm very well.

This watch has a lot of features, looks great, good value and will last forever (at least the one I had 20 years ago did).

My only complaint would be the tide and moon features, which is really what sets this watch apart. Great idea but I'm still playing with the settings. We live right on the water in Florida and are avid boaters and fishermen so these were important features. I don't seem to be getting accurate readings so I just need to mess with it more. Probably just don't have the right area settings programmed in. Obviously it's not as "area specific" as tide settings you'll get on a local chart or online, it seems to be more regional, but I think should still be accurate. So, I'm going to check it out more.

Even without the tide and moon features, it's a great watch. So I'm not concerned. I'm sure I'll get it figured out. NO regrets on this one, I may even buy one for myself.
